Travel just got a little easier! The TSA has started phasing out the requirement to remove shoes at airport security, thanks to new advanced screening technology. For many travelers, this long dreaded checkpoint step is finally on its way out!
What’s Changing?
As of this month, travelers passing through major airports like LAX, LaGuardia, BWI, Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale may no longer need to remove their shoes at TSA checkpoints. The policy shift is due to the rollout of upgraded scanners that can now detect potential threats without the need for passengers to take off footwear.
Security Still Comes First
The TSA reassures travelers that safety remains the top priority. Officers can still request shoe removal in specific cases, such as:
Random security checks
If something unusual is flagged by the scanner
When traveling with special footwear (e.g., orthopedic or steel-toed shoes
What This Means for Your Next Trip
This change is a big win for convenience—especially for families, seniors and those with mobility needs. It's also more hygienic and helps reduce wait times at busy airports.
TSA PreCheck will still offer other benefits (like keeping laptops and liquids in your bag), but now even non-members will enjoy a smoother checkpoint experience at many airports.
Travel Agency Tip:
When flying this summer, wear easy-to-remove shoes just in case you’re asked to take them off. We also recommend arriving early and checking your airport’s TSA procedures, as implementation is happening in phases.
Looking ahead:The TSA expects to expand this no-shoe policy to more airports throughout 2025 and into early 2026.
